The Tulsa Ornament for 1995 | Tulsa's Old Central High School | ||||||||||||||||||||||
This year’s ornament celebrates Tulsa's old Central High School which was built in 1917 to meet the need of Tulsa's growing population. A beautiful Tudor-Gothic revival style building, it was designed by a leading local architect, George Winkler. Made of matt faced brick and edged in Carthage stone, it has a striking stone entry with carvings above and framed by massive stone towers. It rapidly became one of Tulsa's premier schools.
In 1937-38 it was the second largest high school in the nation with a student population of 5,169. It remained on the southeast corner of 6th and Cincinnati until it closed in 1976 when a new school building was built. The old building is now occupied by PSO. |
