The Tulsa Ornament for 2004 Historic Route 66 in Tulsa
This is the view you would see looking North / West at Tulsa's downtown are while driving on Route 66 (11th street approaching Elgin Avenue)
This year’s ornament celebrates the famous historic Route 66 and Cyrus Avery, the businessman and native Tulsan who was instrumental in its creation. The ornament shows what one would see traveling West on Historic Route 66 (11th St.). Here, the buildings to the North depict two more famous aspects of Tulsa. First, Tulsa is renowned for it’s Art Deco Architecture, as seen in the historic Warehouse Market(1929), a unique example of Depression Era style Deco in its use of colored terra cotta tiles. Secondly, Tulsa’s claim as “Oil Capitol of the World” is shown in the Sun Oil Corporation building (1954), the Philtower (1927), and the Cosden (Mid-Continent) building (built in1916 and remodeled in1984). On a more whimsical note, the vehicle chosen for the front piece is a classic ‘59 Corvette convertible - same make and model used in the popular TV series “Route 66".
